A new TexAtelier course for 2023

Hello to all old and potential new students of Texatelier. We are hoping you are well, happy and busily creating.

It's been a while since I contacted you for reasons we all know about but now is the time for us to launch this exciting and brand-new 'in person' 3 day workshop in May 2023 to get your creative juices flowing.

"Mixed Media Collage and Assemblage".

The venue is our lovely Texatelier Studio with river views in the mountains of Central Portugal.
The dates are May 12th-14th 2023, 10am-4pm.

The cost is only 225€

(this is the early bird price if booked before March 31st 2023
& 250€ if booked after this date)

Places limited
All levels welcome

This course will allow you to develop a collection of art pieces, handmade cards, gift wrap, designs to translate onto bags, mugs, tiles, etc., your own personalised fabrics or the most lovely gift for a special friend or family member celebrating a momentous event or memory.
All these items are potential money earners for example I sell my handmade cards for 5 euros each, as mini artworks and I have not bought a card for the last 25 years!

This price also includes refreshments all day and a vegetarian lunch each day. (There will be a jar for donations as this is extra expense and work for me.)
All basic materials are included too.

Here is your chance to take a 3 day creative mini break in the lovely mountains of Central Portugal whilst exploring and developing your art skills using mixed media collage with fabrics, papers, various cards, threads, yarns and also found objects.

Experimenting with paint, dye, print, and stitch, you will decorate a variety of papers, card, cloth, yarns and other surfaces. These will form your own personal stock of coloured, textured and patterned media with which you will explore the exciting possibilities of working in collage and assemblage, there will also be an opportunity to use other techniques such as block printing and stencilling.

You will be guided by artist Nikola Orpen through all the steps of colour, composition and assembly and will conclude the course with your own personal collection of collaged samples and artworks.

There is an interesting article with even more information and photos, including more about Nikola Orpen on our Blog, (link at foot of this notice).

Day 1.

The first day will be spent exploring different media where you will begin to build up your own repertoire of surface pattern techniques and a stock of materials to work with. (above is an example from my work using stitch, fabric collage and assemblage)

This will include an introduction to colour, mark making and print with paint, dye and other media on cloth and various papers, card and yarns.
A day for sampling and finding out what works and does not work, so will be free form and exploratory.

You will be encouraged to combine different techniques together and will have a large range of art materials at hand to work with and get to know and experiment with.

Day 2.

Using your experiments and creations from day 1 you will choose and refine your collection of media and begin to compose your artworks.
(above is an example from my work using dyes, paint, print and collage on silk)

You may also decide to create more pieces that you feel worked well from day 1.

You will be encouraged to work in a series to allow you to 'mix and match' whilst choosing elements that work well together.

Day 3.

This is the chance for you to focus on your potential finished pieces and create your collages by juxtaposing different combinations of the elements you created in the previous 2 days.

By the end of day 3 you will be able to leave with a series of collages and samples and LOTS of knowledge to continue your work  at home.

Texatelier is based on the edge of the village of Benfeita, 1km away.
It is a lovely lively typical Portuguese schist mountain village with cafés, a restaurant, small shop and accommodation, all very affordable.
(if you require accomodation we can put you in touch with various hosts)

Porto is the nearest airport (and a great city) only 1&1/2 hours drive away with a connecting bus service to near our door. We can pick you up from the bus for a small fee or you may feel hiring a car may be best for you to explore the beautiful mountainous area of the Sierras D'Açors and D'Estrella.
